Important supplementary information on the subject of driving licences
If you want to transport a trailer with a permissible total weight of up to 3,500 kg then three driving license classes are relevant for you: B, B96 and BE.
Basically, you always need the category B driving license. However, you are thus relatively limited when it comes to driving with a trailer, as you may then only drive with trailers with a relatively low total weight in practice.
The B96 class license that was launched in 2013, and which constitutes an extension of the B class license, offers more flexibility. The BE class driving license offers you the greatest amount of freedom. Incidentally: the BE class enables you to do everything that you may do with the B96 (and even more) so that you choose between the B96 and the BE, and don't need both driving licenses.
You have the choice of deciding whether the B class license is sufficient for you, or whether you need one of the other classes, and it depends on your respective transportation requirements. Please refer to the following table for information that will help you to make your decision:
B Class driving licence
Using you may transport the following vehicles or combinations of vehicles:
- Cars with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3,500 kg, which are approved for the transportation of up to eight persons whereby the driver is not included in this number.
- Cars with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3,500 kg with a trailer with a maximum permissible weight of up to 750 kg.
- Cars with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3,500 kg with trailer with a maximum permissible weight in excess of 750 kg if the maximum permissible weight of the combination of towing vehicle and trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg
As you will probably already know, people obtain a Class B driving licence by participating in both theoretical and also practical driving school training, and successfully completing a theoretical and practical examination.
Driving licence class B96
With the B96 class driving licence you may drive a B class car with a trailer with a maximum permissible weight of 750 kg, and a maximum permissible weight of the combination of vehicles of more than 3,500 kg, but not more than 4,250 kg.
No examination is necessary to obtain the B96 class licence. However, you must participate in theoretical and practical driving school training that is of at least seven hours duration.
BE Class driving licence
Using the BE Class driving license you may transport combinations of vehicles that fulfill the following requirements:
- B Class towing vehicle
- Total weight of the trailer is not more than 3,500 kg
The requirement for the obtaining of the BE class driving license is the completion of practical training at a driving school and a subsequent practical examination.
The driving license classes B, B96 and BE can be obtained by people aged 18 and over, if they participate in supervised driving for people aged 17 and over.
Please also note that the driving license is not the sole criterion in relation to which trailer you can transport with your towing vehicle. You must always take account of the towing capacity of the towing vehicle stated in the vehicle documents. They can be found in the fields O.1 (braked) and O.2 (unbraked) of the your license certificate part I (formerly registration document).
If you want to transport a trailer with a permissible total weight of more than 3,500 kg then other driving licenses are necessary, e.g. the Class C1E.
